NHL Betting – When To Bet On Big Favorites And When To Hold Back PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 01 February 2012 00:25

If you’re writing a hockey blog or even just reading one, you may also be interested in doing some wagering on the NHL, but you should do some research before heading to a sportsbook to start making bets. For example, what do you do when you see a team as a huge favorite?

Usually the threshold for being a “huge” favorite in the world of hockey is -275 and above, although some places would say -300. To know what to do when you see a team rated this highly, you’ll have to go back in the past (those following Super Bowl odds know all about this). If that team is coming off a loss and they’re favored by that much at home, take the favorites because you know they’re going to come out with a little extra fire after losing in their previous game.

However, if that team is a major favorite on the road (and that is a rarity), lean towards the underdogs because the favorites could still be thinking about the previous game, and chances are they’ll be travelling as well. Even though teams are travelling by private plane now, it is still a long way from sleeping in your own bed.

This is a general rule of thumb to go by when you see a massive hockey betting favorite, and it can be a great help as you’re heading to your online sports book.

Which Team Has The Best Shot At March Madness Title PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 18 January 2012 00:43

The college basketball betting season has reached its midway point, and now talk of March Madness can finally start up. After the first 20 games of the season, things are seemingly the way they should be, as the strongest teams of the Power Six Conferences are atop the AP 25 standings. The biggest shock thus far in the year, is top ranked Syracuse sitting at 20 wins and no losses. We’ve always known that Syracuse has been a good price per head wager, but to go undefeated through the first 20 games is a bit surprising. Today, we’ll look at which team has the best shot at a March Madness title.

March Madness, like the playoffs in the big four major sports, is a time of year, in which literally anything can happen. As we saw in the wild card round of the NFL playoffs, the Denver Broncos and New York Giants were just as deserving of their playoff spots as the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers. While it could be suggested that the Broncos dream season was destined to come to an abrupt halt, the New York Giants appear to be the real deal. As it relates to the March Madness tournament, usually one team pulls a Broncos and squeaks into the tournament then overachieves, while another hits their stride right as the bookie software tournament gets under way.

With that in mind, two teams of particular interest to us in the March Madness Tournament will be the Michigan Wolverines and the Michigan State Spartans. For all intents and purposes, we’ll call the Spartans our Denver Broncos, and the Wolverines our New York Giants. That is to say, the Spartans who currently sit 23rd in the NCAA rankings, are a team that appears to be overachieving. They don’t have one specific star, but their program has been good enough to maintain a high ranking. On the other side of things, Tim Hardaway Jr. who like Eli Manning, has carried his team this season leads the Wolverines.

When looking at both teams, it really depends which of our colleagues you want to agree with, for who should fair better. Firstly, colleagues from Sports Illustrated have the Spartans as a final four pick, with the Wolverines coming in as a dark horse pick if the Spartans should flop. Conversely, at a couple other colleagues early projections, they have the Wolverines and Spartans swapping positions.

In our opinion, the final four will be Ohio State, Kansas, Syracuse and Michigan. Michigan will go head to head with the nation’s best team in Syracuse, while Ohio State will take on Kansas. For Michigan, facing Syracuse in the final four will be eerily similar to facing Duke a season ago, in that many will expect them to be destroyed, but they will take the Orange to the limit. As we noted earlier, Tim Hardaway Jr. who is a freshman and a game changer for the club leads Michigan. For that reason, we really believe Hardaway Jr. can be the difference between losing to Syracuse and pulling off a mammoth of an upset, before beating Kansas for the National Title.

NHL Betting – The Types Of Betting You’ll Find On The Ice PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 04 January 2012 00:39

Montreal Canadiens fans may be having a tough season with their team on the ice, but some may alleviate their stress with some hockey betting and there are a few different types that they may run into while perusing their online sportsbook.

Money Line – The easiest way to wager and one that everyone, from casual fans to experienced players that use price per head systems, can start with. Essentially, you have a favorite (for example, -135) and an underdog (+115), and you would win $100 on a bet of $135, but $115 on a $100 wager.

Puck Line – The puck line is similar to a spread in that a team has to win by a certain amount of goals, but it changes the money line odds to make it so that the favorite has to win by a blowout for you to win, but an underdog just has to keep it close.

Regulation Line – Another spin-off of the money line, this is a game that has to be decided in regulation; if you go to overtime and/or the shootout, you lose.

Totals – This is when you wager on the total amount of goals in a certain game, betting on the over or under. There is also the Grand Salami, which is the total amount of goals that will be scored in all games on a given day in the NHL.

Props/Futures – Props are wagers that don’t have to do with the result of the game, but what will happen with an individual player (will Steven Stamkos score over/under 1.5 goals). Futures are more of a long term online wagering option, such as Stanley Cup winners.

NHL Betting – A Look At The History Of The Stanley Cup PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 December 2011 00:48

If you are following NHL scores, you are well aware of the history of the Stanley Cup, which may be the coolest trophy in professional sports and the traditions that come with the Cup are well documented.

The Stanley Cup is named for Lord Stanley of Preston, who was the Governor General of Canada and donated the Cup in 1893 to the Montreal Hockey Club. Since 1927, the Stanley Cup has been awarded to the champions of the National Hockey League, and the team with the most victories is the Montreal Canadiens, who have won a staggering 24 Cups in their storied history, while Toronto is next in line with 13 and Detroit comes in with 11. Last season’s Cup was won by Boston, who defeated the team that most price per head services had as the favorites, Vancouver, in a seven-game series. Seven defunct teams have won the Stanley Cup, and there are six current teams that have never had the chance to play for Lord Stanley’s Cup. It is a very difficult task to repeat as champions in the NHL, and the last team to do so was Detroit, back in 1997 and 1998.

The Stanley Cup playoffs is arguably the toughest of all the postseasons in professional sports, but the winner gets to drink champagne out of the Cup (a tradition that began in 1896), and the image of the winning captain hoisting the Cup and skating around the rink is one that NHL fans look forward to every year. Make sure to take history into account before making your sport betting pick for the Stanley Cup.

NHL Odds – Oilers Hope Third Time’s A Charm Against Flames PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 07 December 2011 00:44

The Edmonton Oilers have been a major surprise in the early part of the NHL season, and with all of their young players, they’re one of the most exciting teams in the league. However, they’re currently slumping and the Oilers will hope to be out of it by the time Saturday rolls around, when they’ll go for their first win in three tries against their rivals from Calgary.

Oilers Flames Odds – Saturday, 10:00 PM ET

The Oilers had dropped four of their last five after a loss to the Flames on Saturday, and many bookies that use price per head services are backing off Edmonton, whose offense is struggling with Taylor Hall on the sidelines. The defense is regressing as well and the Oilers have two chances to fix things as they host Carolina and Colorado this week.

The Flames followed up their big win in Edmonton with a 5-1 loss in Vancouver, and backup goalie Henrik Karlsson is still looking for his first win of the season.  Calgary will also host Carolina and Colorado this week as the teams make their trips through western Canada, and the Flames will be looking to get to .500 before the Oilers come to down.

Calgary should be the home favorites with two wins over Edmonton this season, and they’ve won nine in a row at the Saddledome over their neighbors to the north. Four of the last five have gone over the posted total, and you can expect a couple of fights as well. Both teams are a little shorthanded due to injuries, but taking Calgary at home is the play to make at sports betting sites.
