If you’re writing a hockey blog or even just reading one, you may also be interested in doing some wagering on the NHL, but you should do some research before heading to a sportsbook to start making bets. For example, what do you do when you see a team as a huge favorite?

Usually the threshold for being a “huge” favorite in the world of hockey is -275 and above, although some places would say -300. To know what to do when you see a team rated this highly, you’ll have to go back in the past (those following Super Bowl odds know all about this). If that team is coming off a loss and they’re favored by that much at home, take the favorites because you know they’re going to come out with a little extra fire after losing in their previous game.

However, if that team is a major favorite on the road (and that is a rarity), lean towards the underdogs because the favorites could still be thinking about the previous game, and chances are they’ll be travelling as well. Even though teams are travelling by private plane now, it is still a long way from sleeping in your own bed.

This is a general rule of thumb to go by when you see a massive hockey betting favorite, and it can be a great help as you’re heading to your online sports book.
